Bitcoin Price Plunges: Cryptocurrency Market Experiences Sharp Decline in August 2023

Image
The price of Bitcoin, the world's first decentralized cryptocurrency, experienced a significant drop of 12% this week. As of August 19, 2023, the current price of Bitcoin stands at $25,977.43 per BTC/USD, which is 62.24% below its all-time high of $68,789.63. This sudden drop in Bitcoin's price can be attributed to several factors. One of the primary reasons for the drop was decreased activity in the market. The crypto market has been experiencing a broader sell-off of risky assets, with Bitcoin accounting for nearly half of the loss. According to CoinGlass, a cryptocurrency trading platform, $1 billion has been drained from cryptocurrencies over the past 24 hours.  Another contributing factor was the growing crisis in China's property sector. The crisis has led to increased market volatility and uncertainty, impacting the price of Bitcoin. Furthermore, a report that Elon Musk's SpaceX sold its bitcoin holdings after writing the value down by $373 million was identifi...

Bitcoin: El Salvador Rolls Out Nationwide Acceptance of Bitcoin, Protests Erupt, Bitcoin tumbles 10%

This is Day 1 for El Salvador becoming the first country in the world to accept bitcoin as a legal tender. It's a first for the digital currency.  But despite a relatively smooth rollout plus incentives like $30 in bitcoin for those who sign up, many Salvadorians protested the move.  Using bitcoin to buy a cup of coffee, clothes, haircut, and even the daily newspaper instead of US dollars is now an option to the people in El Salvador as the country becomes the first in the world to adopt the volatile crypto as its national currency.  They can even pay their taxes in bitcoin if they want to and that's possible because a key part of this new law that went into effect at midnight actually requires businesses to accept bitcoin.  It's a big test for bitcoin in the real world, and for Salvadorans.  To get them started the government is giving $30 to people who sign up to an e-wallet called Chivo, which allows for the automatic conversion of dollars to bitcoin and vic...

Affected by the news that the U.S. Treasury Department will accuse multiple financial institutions of using cryptocurrency to launder money, on the 18th, Bitcoin fell below $52,000 each. Within a day, Bitcoin, which once stood at a high of $60,000, fell more than $10,000, a drop of more than 17%.  Bloomberg said on the 18th that in addition to Bitcoin, other cryptocurrencies also plummeted that day. Calculated by the 24-hour rise and fall, Ethereum plummeted by 20%, Binance Coin plummeted by 17%, and so on. The rapid decline of cryptocurrencies caused heavy losses for long investors. Within 24 hours, more than 470,000 people broke their positions and nearly $40 billion in funds were wiped out.  Several reports attribute this round of decline to market speculation that the U.S. Treasury Department may crack down on money laundering through cryptocurrencies. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell recently stated that Bitcoin is “a bit like gold” because it is more of a speculat...
