American Teofimo Lopez won the unified lightweight title, winning unanimously by the judges after a close fight against Ukrainian Vasiliy Lomachenko on Saturday in Las Vegas. Lopez, who was the IBF champion in the category, seized the WBA, WBC and WBO belts, held by his opponent, undefeated for six years.
Teofimo Lopez, 23, became the youngest boxer to hold a unified title since the creation of the WBO in 1988. "I am ready to dominate the world," said the American, winner of his 16 professional fights (including 12 by KO). Lopez has not lost since his loss as an amateur at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, which he played for Honduras.
Lomachenko disagree with the judges' decision
The three judges gave him the victory (119-109, 117-111 and 116-112), but the contested fight without spectators, due to the measures taken to combat the coronavirus pandemic, seemed tighter than the indicate the scores.
After a first half of the fight dominated by Lopez, Lomachenko raised the tone in the last rounds, but not enough to successfully defend the title won in 2018 at the expense of the Venezuelan Jorge Linares for a fourth time.
"I think I won the fight," said the double Ukrainian Olympic champion (2008, 2012), who left the ring immediately after the announcement of the scores. He won more rounds in the first half of the fight. In the second half, I took control. I don't agree with the scores. "
