The American Music Awards (AMA) awarded the best in music this Sunday from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, United States. The Weeknd and Roddy Ricch lead the event's nominations competing in eight categories each.

 

Taylor Swift won Artist of the Year.  Though Swift won the show's top honor, it was The Weeknd who dominated with multiple wins.

The Weeknd (real nameAbel Makkonen Tesfaye), who appears with bizarrely bandaged face, took home the trophies for Favourite Male Artist – Soul/R&B, Favourite Album – Soul/R&B, and Favourite Song – Soul/R&B. Bieber, meanwhile, picked up Collaboration Of The Year, Favourite Male Artist – Pop/Rock and Favourite Song – Country. 

 

Taylor Swift

The biggest news of all was announced by Taylor Swift.  She is currently rerecording all of her old music amid her very public feud with Scooter Braun over the masters of her first six albums.

She said:  "I'm re-recording all my music, and it's been amazing, and I can't wait for you to hear it."

Taraji P. Henson was responsible for presenting the event. Among the main performances at AMA are the South Korean group BTS, Dua Lipa, Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez, Maluma,Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, Megan Thee Stallion, as well as the unexpected duet of The Weeknd and Kenny G. 

This in-person ceremony aired on ABC was wildly socially distanced with cardboard cutouts of Beyonce, Jay Z, Dolly Parton and others.

Justin Bieber opened the awards singing Lonely, in partnership with Benny Blanco. He sang two more songs: Holy and Monster, the last in partnership with Shawn Mendes. The track is part of the singer's next album, Wonder.

The Weeknd won the Favorite Soul / R & B Album Award, the first category announced for the night. He dedicated the award to singer Prince. "The last time I received this award was at the hands of the late Prince, he is the reason I always want to challenge myself within this genre of R&B, and I wanted to dedicate this award to him", thanked the singer.

After being awarded, The Weeknd went to downtown Los Angeles for a presentation full of fireworks alongside Kenny G.

Katy Perry took the stage for the first time since becoming a mom and performed “Only Love” with Darius Rucker. The voice and guitar presentation brought an intimate atmosphere to the awards.

 

Maluma and Jennifer Lopez

 

One of the highlights of the evening was Jennifer Lopez and Maluma, who performed their duet “Pa' Ti + Lonely" live for the first time. (The song is on the soundtrack for their upcoming movie, Marry Me.) It was a spellbinding set, filled with choreography, trippy lights, and sweaty chemistry between Lopez and Maluma. So sweaty, in fact, that ABC censors were allegedly “freaking out" over it before showtime.


Megan Thee Stallion received a standing ovation on stage. She presented Body, single from her debut album Good News. The rapper and singer is considered one of the revelations of the world of music in 2020.

Doja Cat won new artist of the year and Becky G won favorite female Latin artist, a brand new category at the AMAs.

BTS

BTS, the K-pop band — made up of members Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook closed the show with a performance of their songs “Life Goes On” and “Dynamite,” and they also won both of their nominations as Favorite Social Artist and Favorite Pop/Rock Duo or Group. To date, the Korean boy band has never lost at the AMAs when nominated.
