Mysterious Metal Monolith in Utah

A mysterious metal "obelisk," or monolith, found buried in the remote desert of the western United States has ignited the imaginations of late British filmmaker Stanley Kubrick's UFO watchers, conspiracy theorists and fans around the world. .

The glowing triangular pillar, protruding approximately more than ten feet from the red rocks of southern Utah, was discovered last Wednesday by local officials.

Upon landing to investigate, crew members from the Utah Department of Public Safety found "a metal monolith installed in the ground," but "no obvious indication of who might have put the monolith there."

"It is illegal to install structures or works of art without authorization on public land administered by the federal government, no matter what planet it is from," the agency warned in a press release with a twist on Monday.

News of the discovery quickly went viral on the Internet, with many noting the object's similarity to strange alien monoliths that unleashed huge advances in human progress in classic works of science fiction such as Kubrick's famous film "2001: A Space Odyssey". from 1968.

Others commented on the discovery during a turbulent year in which the world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, optimistically speculating that it could serve a completely different role.

"This is the 'reset' button for 2020. Can anyone quickly press it?"

joked a user of the social network Instagram.

With officials refusing to reveal the object's location for fear of hordes of onlookers approaching the remote desert, an online race has also started to geolocate the "obelisk" using the surrounding rock formations.

Bret Hutchings, the pilot who discovered while flying over the obelisk, speculated that the item had been planted by "some new trend artist."

The helicopter pilot told local news channel KSLTV:

"This is the strangest thing I have come across in all my years of flying."

Hutchings was flying for the Utah Department of Public Safety, which helps wildlife officials count bighorn sheep in the southern part of the state.

"One of the biologists saw it. He yelled for us to turn around to see something weird that we had flown over,"

said Hutchings, who also said the object looks man-made and placed there on purpose.

Some observers noted the resemblance of the object to the avant-garde work of John McCracken, an American artist who lived for a time in nearby New Mexico and died in 2011.
