The attack occurred on Wednesday, March 17 in San Francisco while Miss Xie was waiting to cross the road.

It is said that she suddenly heard someone calling "Chinese" before she was punched in the face. According to reports, she fought back with a wooden stick seen nearby.

After the attack, an online video showed Ms. Xie crying while applying an ice pack to her severely bruised eyes, while the assailant was lying on a stretcher. San Francisco police said the 39-year-old man was arrested and they are investigating the attack.

Ms. Xie's daughter said her mother was "very traumatized." She added that her right eye was injured.

"She is scared, her eyes are still bleeding." Li Dongmei said." The right eye still can't see anything."

Her grandson John Chen later posted a GoFundMe (Go Fund Me) post for her grandmother, asking people to pay for her grandmother's medical expenses.

He said that her two eyes were severely black, one of them kept bleeding, and her wrists were swollen.

Her courage was praised by many netizens.  Others pointed out that she taught him a lesson, and they also called on Asians as a whole to unite despite their differences.
