Fans of BTS were suprised and reacting on the news today that Big Hit Entertainment will be changing its official company name to HYBE Corporation.
According to reports, the name change marks Big Hit Entertainment's transformation from a management agency for acts like BTS and TXT to a comprehensive content company. The label made the announcement through a report with Korea's Financial Supervisory Service.
Company head Bang Si Hyuk said, "We'll become the world's leading entertainment and lifestyle platform company. By removing 'entertainment,' we'll have a new, comprehensive image as a general content group, which is our mission."
The Big Hit website states: “Big Hit Entertainment continues to make new innovations to the music industry business model. Big Hit strives to become the world’s best music-based entertainment lifestyle platform company.”
HYBE Corporation will also oversee real estate by renting out practice rooms and other spaces for their subsidiary companies and affiliates, alongside music production, performance, management, and internet business.
Under the HYBE Corporation umbrella, the various music labels and subsidiaries such as Big Hit Label will maintain their names, and the company will maintain the structure.
The general shareholder's meeting covering the name change from Big Hit Entertainment to HYBE Corporation will be held on March 30 KST.
BTS members have released individual selfies with the hashtag - What Do You Believe In? The trending hashtag is connected to HYBE Corporation's tagline - We Believe In Music.
Meanwhile, K Pop fans have taken to Twitter and have mixed reactions to the name change.
Keywords like 'What is Happening?' 'Jin Hit Entertainment and 'What Do You Believe In' trended on Twitter and many of them seem less than impressed with the rebranding.
Big Hit was founded back in 2005. Its value rose over the years thanks to the global popularity of its first boy group BTS who debuted under Big Hit Entertainment on June 13, 2013.
The company has multiple subsidiaries, including Source Music, Pledis Entertainment, Belift Lab, and KOZ Entertainment, collectively known as Big Hit Labels.
