Spanish Laughing Guy Meme: Juan Joya Borja, aka 'El Risitas' who went viral for laughing guy meme dies
Juan Joya Borja, the Spanish comedian known as El Risitas, which means Giggles, died on Wednesday at the hospital, according to local media. It was reported that he suffered a "sudden relapse" in his health.
He had been admitted to the hospital for health problems last year and thanked his fans in March for a fundraising campaign to buy him an electric scooter after his leg was amputated.
Borja became known on the Internet as the "Spanish laughing guy" after appearing on national television and going viral for his high-pitched laugh while telling a story.
He attended a late-night Spanish television show hosted by Jesús Quintero about 20 years ago and told the host a story about how he worked as a kitchen helper.
In the clip that finally brought him fame, he told Quintero about the time he left 20 paella dishes in the sea overnight to allow the salt to clean them, but found the next morning that the tide had washed all but one.
The presenter and Quintero burst into fits of uncontrollable and contagious laughter during and after the story, with Borja's signature panting.
The clip was first uploaded to the show's YouTube channel in 2007, but reappeared in 2014 after people began posting the clip with unrelated captions to make it look like Borja was laughing hysterically at various topics.
His almost toothless smile is used today as an emoticon on the game streaming platform Twitch, and his unforgettable laugh has given him a permanent place on the Internet.
