Miami Building Collapse: Video Shows Moment of Miami Building Collapse, the day before the incident residents heard squeaks all night, President Biden said federal government is ready to help
A 40-year-old oceanfront apartment tower collapsed Thursday in Surfside, Near Miami Beach, Florida, U.S. |
At least one person was dead, and 99 people were possibly missing after a 12-story residential building partially collapsed early Thursday in Miami-Dade County, Florida.
So far, 12 people were injured, including two in critical condition.
Authorities said they responded to the call at around 1:30 a.m. local time, triggering a large-scale rescue operation.
Officials said more than 30 occupants were rescued after the collapse.
Rescue crews are still searching for survivors as a massive emergency response to the incident in the town of Surfside, and the rescue operation could take a week or even longer.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis toured the Surfside condo collapse damage and called it "really traumatic."
"The TV doesn't do it justice. It is really, really traumatic to see the collapse of a massive structure like that," DeSantis said. "We still have hope to be able to identify additional survivors."
About 55 units in the building have been damaged, according to authorities. Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said the building was substantially full of occupants at the time of the collapse.
It's still unclear exactly how many residents were in the building when the incident happened.
Video footage from the scene showed a large section of the building, collapsed into a pile of rubble, and a young boy was pulled alive from the rubble.
Built in 1981, the building has 136 units and is located across from a sandy beach in the oceanfront community of about 6,000 people.
President Biden said federal government is ready to help.
“I say to the people of Florida, whatever help you want that the federal government can provide, we are waiting, just ask us, we’ll be there,” Biden said.
Authorities didn't immediately say what may have caused the collapse, but some residents said that the night before the collapse they heard squeaks all night.
