Naftali Bennett sworn in as Israel's new PM, ending Netanyahu's 12-year rule

Naftali Bennett, leader of the right-wing Yamina (United Right) party was sworn in as new Israeli prime minister on Sunday, ending Benjamin Netanyahu's 12-year rule.

Naftali Bennett, leader of the right-wing Yamina (United Right) party was sworn in as new Israeli prime minister on Sunday, ending Benjamin Netanyahu's 12-year rule. 


This came after the parliament, or Knesset, approved the new coalition government headed by Bennett and Yair Lapid, leader of the centrist Yesh Atid (Future) party. 

The government's 27 new ministers were also sworn in after 60 lawmakers of the 120-member chamber voted in favor of the new government while 59 voted against it. 

Bennett and Lapid will rotate as the prime minister on a two-year basis, with Bennett going first and and Lapid will serve as Israel's alternate prime minister and foreign minister.

The new coalition includes 8 parties, including the Islamist Ra'am party, the first Arab faction included in a governing coalition in Israel. 

Thousands of Israelis gathered in Tel Aviv's Rabin Square on Sunday to celebrate the end of the political crisis that saw 4 elections in 2 years.
