Prince William and Prince Harry have unveiled a statue of their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales on what would have been her 60th birthday.
The statue shows the princess standing with three children by her side. The unveiling marked the first time the brothers were seen together since the funeral of their grandfather, Prince Philip, when they were reportedly "at each other's throats." But today, the brothers put on a good front.
With Princess Diana's sisters and her brother joining William and Harry in Kensington Palace’s newly-conserved Sunken Garden this afternoon, it was a deliberately small family gathering.
The two princes stepped up to the green cloth and unveiled the statue of their late mother.
Diana has been memorialized here with three children not any child in particular but children of no nationality to symbolize the generational impact of the work she once did and said the sculptor so that the princess would not be standing there alone.
The bronze statue, by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, was commissioned by Prince William and Prince Harry in 2017, and aims to recognise the Princess’s positive impact in the UK and around the world, and reflect her warmth, elegance and energy.
William and Harry have now spent a quarter of a century without their mother, Diana was 36 when she died. Today she would have been 60.
They said in a rare joint statement "everyday we wish she was still with us."
A gardener still working there remembers how much Diana loved the place where her statue now rests.
William and Harry said they wanted this statue to be forever a symbol of their mother's life and legacy.
Diana's family and indeed the nation does now have a place to come to reflect on the impact she had.
