Humanoid Robot: Elon Musk wants to eliminate boring tasks with 'Tesla Bot'

Now we look to the future.  At Tesla's AI day event, Elon Musk announced they are developing Tesla Bot, a humanoid robot, life size.

It's a slim human-like machine.  The body is white with gray accents from its feet to where its collarbones would be then it's all black.

Musk shared a couple of slides showing what to expect from the Tesla Bot.  He assures that his creation will be friendly and navigate a world that's built for humans.

We'd be looking at a five foot eight robot, weighing only 125 pounds since it is built out of undisclosed lightweight materials. It will be able to carry 45 pounds or deadlift a 150 pounds.

AI is a big part of Tesla Bot with one slide mentioning the use of neural net planning, simulation, and multicam video neural networks.

A little bit of reassurance is that the Tesla bot is not fast. It reaches speeds of up to 5 miles per hour. Musk joked that you could actually run away from it and if necessary overpower it.

The head would feature a screen to provide information to whomever is looking at the bot and uses Tesla's full self-driving computer with an autopilot system with 8 cameras to help it navigate.

One of the goals the Tesla bot is to eliminate dangerous, repetitive, boring tasks.  Musk says his humanoid robot could be able to pick up bolts and attach them to cars with a wrench or go to a store for a grocery run.

Musk says he expect his technology to have profound implications for the economy and could actually replace some workers.

The Tesla robot is called Optimus at least right now.  They say the prototype is going to be ready by 2022.

This is getting a lot of attention, that what Tesla was aiming for.  At the end of the presentation, they made it very clear on the stream, "Come work at Tesla AI."  They are looking for that artificial intelligence talent and that's really what this was, a big recruiting pitch.
