Beijing police posted on Weibo that Kris Wu has just been arrested on suspicions of sexual assault and possible rape. The former EXO member has been detained by the Chaoyang Public Security Bureau on the evening of July 31.
The Chaoyang division of the Beijing police department made a statement on Weibo (Chinese microblogging site) saying the investigation centered on online allegations that the pop star, 30, had "deceived young women multiple times into having sexual relations."
"After police investigated the reports made online regarding "Wu Yifan tricking young girls into having sexual relations multiple times," Wu Yifan (Male, 20, Canadian) has been detained by the Chaoyang police on suspicious of rape. The case is currently ongoing."
The first accusation came early this month when 19-year-old student Du Meizhu posted on social media that she had met Wu when she was 17.
She said she had been invited to a party at his home, where she was pressured to drink alcohol and woke up in his bed the next day. Du said seven other women had told her Wu had seduced them with promises of jobs and other opportunities. She said some were minors.
Wu strongly deny everything saying if he did do any of this he would basically take himself to prison.
More brave girls have since come forward to expose Wu, wanting to seek justice for themselves. Accusations made against Wu included possibly luring in underage girls as well. The investigation is still not over yet but police are confident enough in what they've found so far to arrest Wu.
He's being detained in order for them to further investigate, interrogate, whatever they need to do to him. Also being Canadian, authorities probably want to make sure he stays in China during the investigation.
Fans, celebrities and official media reacted to Kris Wu's criminal detention. After the matter came out, it immediately caused a huge discussion on the internet. Most of Wu's fans left the fandom and his Weibo Super Topic has been taken down. Many fans left goodbye messages on Super Talk.
Wu's studio and companies are closed. Some netizens also said that Wu's studio was empty. The Golden Hairpin Drama official Weibo account also deleted all posts related to Kris Wu.
Official government and media accounts angrily scolded Wu.
People's Daily said:
"There is not top class in front of the law. Foreign nationality is not a talisman. Fame does not bring immunity. Whoever breaks the law will be punished by law. Remember: the higher the popularity, the more you must be self-disciplined and the more you must abide by the law."
China Women's Daily said:
"Again, there is no room for dirt in a society under the rule of law, and no circle is outside the law! No matter how dazzling the halo, no matter how famout it is, there is no privilege. No one can be above the law on the land of China! If suspected of illegal crimes, they must be investigated! Must be punished!"
Celebrities and friends who supported Kris Wu before apologized and avoided him.
Wu, one of China's biggest celebrities, first shot to fame as a member of the K-pop boyband EXO. He left in 2014 to launch a successful solo career as a singer, actor, model, and talent show judge.
