'Shang-Chi' saves the Box Office, blasts Labor Day records with $71.4M debut in the U.S.
This weekend finds a new superhero stepping up to save Hollywood. The new blockbuster 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' is breaking labor day weekend box office records, racking up more than 71 million bucks in the U.S.
Marvel's first Asian-led superhero movie ranks as one of the best debuts in the time of pandemic. It's one of the biggest openings of the Covid era.
Shang-Chi raked in $71.4 million in ticket sales over the weekend shattering expectations. The Marvel studio adventure is on track to bring in another 10 million by the time the three-day holiday concludes.
The film shattered the all-time labor day record at the box office previously held by 2007's 'Halloween' (that was the remake) that made $30 million at the box office.
That impressive debut was enough to make the film star Simu Liu jump for joy. Liu delivered the ceremonial first pitch during a San Francisco Giants game on Sunday, back flipping on the mound.
The movie is setting a new bar for Asian representation on Hollywood silver screen focusing on the Avengers' first Asian protagonist.
An all-star cast that includes Awkwafina, Fala Chen, and Hong-Kong legend Tony Leung as the newest Marvel supervillain.
Shang-Chi also enjoyed the 2nd highest opening weekend since the start of the pandemic, trailing only the US$80.3 million earned in July by another Marvel film, Black Widow.
Unlike this summer's 'Black Widow' which had a simultaneous streaming release, Shang-chi was released exclusively in theaters jolting life into an industry hurt hard by the pandemic.
