Twitter rival 'Threads' by Meta (formerly known as Facebook) garnered mixed reactions from netizens

Threads vs. Twitter

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has officially launched a new text-based app called Threads, designed to rival Twitter. The launch of Threads has sparked a flurry of reactions from netizens, with some declaring it as the end of Twitter while others were more skeptical about its potential

Threads, which was unveiled on July 5th, 2023, is intended to offer a space for real-time conversations online, a function that has long been Twitter's core selling point. The app received an impressive 30 million sign-ups within the first day of its launch, according to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The app is available in over 100 countries, including the U.S., Britain, Australia, Canada, and Japan.

The launch of Threads comes amid a period of turmoil for Twitter, which has seen significant changes since being acquired by tech mogul Elon Musk. These changes include the introduction of a paid subscription service, tweet viewing limits, and alterations to the platform's image cropping feature.

Despite the excitement surrounding the launch of Threads, the app has not been without its criticisms. Some users have described the app as "buggy" and lacking in basic features. For instance, every new follower needs to be approved via request, similar to a private Instagram account, and the app has been reported to crash occasionally when users attempt to upload images with their threads.

There are also netizens who remain skeptical or critical of this development. They express concerns about potential privacy issues, as Meta has faced controversies related to data security in the past. These users worry that threaded conversations might lead to more complex and convoluted discussions, making it harder to follow conversations or find relevant information.

Additionally, some netizens question the originality of this feature, as rival platforms like Twitter have had threaded conversations for quite some time. They argue that Meta should focus on addressing existing issues and improving core functionalities rather than introducing features already available elsewhere.

However, the launch of Threads has also sparked a wave of humor and creativity among netizens, with many sharing hilarious memes and reactions on social media. Some users have even shared their experiences of shuttling between Instagram and Twitter, while others have humorously depicted their quick return to Twitter after trying out Threads.

The rivalry between Twitter and Threads has also led to some playful banter between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. In response to a user's tweet about Threads, Musk sarcastically commented about the world being under Zuckerberg's thumb, to which Zuckerberg responded with a challenge for a cage match.

In conclusion, the launch of Threads by Meta has stirred up the social media landscape, leading to a mix of excitement, skepticism, and humor among netizens. As the battle of the text-focused social media apps continues, it remains to be seen how Threads will fare against its established competitor, Twitter.
