On August 25th, 2023, a momentous event occurred in American history. Former President Donald J. Trump, along with several other defendants, had their mug shots released by the Fulton County Sheriff's Office. This marked the first time in history that a former president of the United States had been criminally charged and had a booking photo released.

The image captured Trump in a blue suit, white shirt, and red tie, his gaze meeting the camera lens with an intense glare. The sheriff's logo was digitally added above his right shoulder. Unlike some of the 18 others charged alongside him, who smiled as if posing for a yearbook, Trump's defiance was palpable. He later described the experience as uncomfortable, especially since he believed he had done nothing wrong.

This mug shot was not like any other photograph of Trump. Americans were already familiar with the sight of Trump facing charges, having seen him stand before a judge in a New York courtroom or viewed watercolor sketches from inside federal courthouses in Miami and Washington. However, this mug shot was different. It was taken inside a jail in downtown Atlanta, marking a tiny but significant inflection point in American life.

The release of the mug shot was quickly capitalized upon by Trump's campaign. They used it as a fundraising opportunity, releasing a new T-shirt featuring the image and the quote: "This mugshot will forever go down in history as a symbol of America’s defiance of tyranny." The campaign reported a spike in contributions each time Trump was indicted.

The mug shot also sparked reactions from various quarters. CNN's Anderson Cooper noted that the former president now had an inmate number, P01135809. U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene showed her support for Trump by posting a photo of herself mimicking the style of the mug shot. Even President Joe Biden, who had previously declined to comment on his predecessor's legal troubles, sarcastically remarked on the mugshot, calling Trump a "handsome guy."

Despite the negative connotations typically associated with mug shots, Trump did not treat it as a moment of shame. Instead, he leveraged it for his campaign, which saw a significant increase in donations following the release of the mug shot. In fact, the campaign raised nearly $20 million in the three weeks following Trump's indictment on charges related to his role in trying to overturn the Georgia vote count in the 2020 election.

The mug shot of Donald Trump, the first of its kind for a former U.S. president, is likely to be remembered as a significant moment in American history. As Mitchell Stephens, a professor emeritus at New York University, put it, "That moment is going to live on. And it’s entirely possible that it will end up as the image that history preserves of this man."
