James Webb Space Telescope: NASA Successfully launches $10B Space Telescope

Image
NASA's James Webb Space Telescope NASA's journey beyond stars is officially underway. The space agency got exactly what it wanted for Christmas with the successful launch of the James Webb Space Telescope.  Folded inside the nose cone of the European Ariane 5 rocket, the $10B space observatory lifted off from its launch site Arianespace's ELA-3 launch complex at European Spaceport located near Kourou, French Guiana early Christmas morning. NASA's James Webb space telescope represents a new era in space discovery. The James Webb Space Telescope is NASA's largest and most expensive scientific probe ever sent into space.   As each rocket stage fell away, Webb was set loose. Cheers went up and images of the earth receded as the most powerful space telescope ever build began a voyage in search of the birth of the universe.  It's going to replace the 31 year old Hubble Space Telescope as the premiere space observatory. Image
Rihanna The Caribbean islands nations, Barbados, has become the world's newest republic severing its colonial bonds with Britain nearly 400 years after the first English ships arrived there. One of its first acts as a republic was to declare superstar Rihanna a national hero. The Royal Standard was lowered over Barbados and it became a republic. Some of this country's most well-known names were among the VIP guests attending the transition ceremony.  Rihanna said of all awards she's received nothing compared to being recognized by her home country. "The people y'all are the true heroes of Barbados and I take y'all with me whereever I go. I'm so prod to be a Bajan." Rihanna has held the honorary title of Ambassador for Culture and Youth in Barbados since 2018. And although not a stat holiday, Rihanna Day is celebrated by many on the island every year on February 22nd. Celebrations marked a new future as the Caribbean nation severed ties with Queen...

Omicron: Global alarm over Omicron virus variant

Image
Travel restrictions as new Omicron variant spreads The world has a new COVID-19 "variant of concern." There's growing global alarm over B.1.1.529 variant. It was first identified on Nov. 23 in South Africa and is believed to be behind a sudden surge in cases. The B.1.1.529 variant has been given the name Omicron. It is said to be the most heavily mutated version of the novel coronavirus we have seen so far.  About 30 mutations have been identified in the spike protein-about twice as many as the Delta variant. The mutations could make Omicron more transmissible and it's unknown if it will prove more deadly than the previous variants.  The mutations make the spike protein significantly different than the original version of the virus that vaccines were based on. And it will take weeks to determine whether vaccines are effective against it.  The international response has been swift. Many countries have shut down air travel from South Africa itself. The bans also ex...

'DART' Mission: NASA spacecraft to crash into asteroid to avert doomsday

Image
Dart Launch NASA is testing a new planetary defense system designed to knock an asteroid from a potential collision on Earth. But there's no need to panic, this one isn't headed for earth. They are doing that to basically test the technique to save the planet if there was ever killer asteroid coming towards earth. At this point you might be thinking of Hollywood movies like Armageddon where astronauts drill into an asteroid and plant a bomb or Deep Impact where the president orders a nuclear. But the technique in this mission will be a little less dramatic.  A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying a spacecraft has blasted off from California on a mission to smash a robot spacecraft into an asteroid.  The Double Asteroid Redirection Test or DART will examine NASA's ability to alter an asteroid's trajectory with kinetic force. The mission is to basically go hit an asteroid and see if it can be moved. The DART technique could prove useful for the altering course of an asteroid y...

SQUID GAME: Korean original series 'Squid Game' becomes global hit

Image
‘Squid Game’ is set to become Netflix’s most-streamed series ever. It currently tops global ranking on Netflix and it's the first Korean series to claim the number 1 spot in the US. It's about a game show where about 500 people who are in debt forced to compete in life or death versions of classic children's games like "Red light, Green light" with the promise of millions of dollars at stake for the winner. A winner-takes all game, plotting against each other and people get killed off. We would describe Squid Game as a little Hunger Games-esque but even more violent. The Korean language drama is so hyper violent but that hasn't slowed down the millions of fans obsessed with the series.  A phenomena, Squid Game has a rare 100 critics rating on rotten tomatoes and it's number 1 in 90 countries. There's also a crazy plot-twist in the end. That's why some think it's a good show.  Korean TV shows and movies along with other cultural exports like K-b...

Apple security update: Pegasus spyware invisibly infects iPhones

Image
Iphone 13 Apple revealed its new iPhone but also sharing the headlines with something else. Apple is also releasing an emergency software update for iPhones, iPads, watches, and Macs. That is because there's a new spyware circulating out there in which the attackers can get into your iPhone without even sending you a bogus link. Experts call it a Zero Click Exploit because it does not require a user to click on a link or download a file to allow someone to take over their device. Instead, the spyware exploits a flaw in the iMessage app, allowing others to gain control of the device without the user knowing they've been hacked.  Behind this spyware is called the NSO Group, an Israeli software company that made the so-called 'Pegasus' spyware. Authorities worried it can access the camera, the mic, texts, and emails. This spyware gets in just by knowing your cell phone number. Apple for its parts believes there is not a threat to the vast majority of its users but says...
